Becoming a Member
We are pleased you are considering becoming a member of East Midlands RoSPA. It may help to explain the process of becoming a qualified Advanced Driver. Whilst this may differ from person to person, it generally follows this path…
Enquiry Stage – You contact us (usually through this website) expressing an interest. We get back to you and arrange a time for you to have a free and no obligation assessment drive.
The Assessment Drive – You drive your car with one of our Tutors in the passenger seat. The Tutor will provide all the guidance of where you are to go, so all you have to do is drive. It’s normal to be a little apprehensive about being assessed, but our Tutors will do their best to put you at ease. At the end of the drive, you will get a feedback form about how the Tutor perceived your driving, and some thoughts for improvement. You will also be provided with more information about joining EM RoSPA, and we leave you to decide whether you wish to join or not. We will need to see your driving licence; motor insurance certificate; and MOT certificate if your vehicle needs one. If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, please make sure you are wearing them during the drive!
Joining – You pay the fee (see below) and fill in the membership form we provide. We shall give you two books: RoadCraft (the Police Driving Manual) and the Highway Code. These are essential reading in order to pass your test.
We have “Terms & Conditions” of Membership that we expect all members to abide by. These can be accessed by clicking here.
Attend Driving Sessions – These are held fortnightly on Sundays normally at our centres in Findern or Cheadle. In order to progress, you will obviously need to attend regularly, take note of the the feedback comments you get at each session, and practice what you have been taught every day you drive.
Take the Test – Your tutors will advise you when you are at a sufficient standard to take the test and should pass it. At the end of the test, hopefully you will be awarded a pass at either a “Bronze”, “Silver” or “Gold” level. For many people it can take about 12 months to get to this point.
You’ve Passed, Now What? – It depends on what you want to do. We would like you to stay on as a member and you can get free tuition to keep your driving standard at an advanced level. It would be a shame to let it slip again after all your hard work wouldn’t it. Some people may wish to become a Tutor, and there are opportunities in fundraising, promotional work, and being part of the committee.
